Reviewed from notes taken in Spring 2015 for a nitro-draught pour @ Brooklyn Brewery.
6.70% ABV. Chile porter.
APPEARANCE: Pours a tan head, half a finger in height. Creamy and soft in appearance. Gorgeous. ~4 minute retention. Even lacing.
Opaque black. No yeast/sediment is visible within. Very good for the style.
AROMA: Cream, ancho chile (i.e. mild) chili heat, dark malts. Muted but inviting.
Below average aromatic strength.
No overt hops, overt yeast, or alcohol.
TASTE: The core conceit is effective: the subtle chile heat works with the cream and dark porter malts, but the malt backbone just isn't robust enough, and it comes off muted and reticent rather than evocative or vivid. The balance is great, but it's quite simplistic in build.
Likable and enjoyable. Average duration and intensity of flavour.
Roasted barley would really liven this up.
TEXTURE: Wonderfully creamy and soft. Mouthfeel is the best aspect of this beer. Smooth, wet, medium-bodied. Not too thick or syrupy. Spot-on for a nitro porter.
OVERALL: Obscenely drinkable. But its limited intricacy and lack of fundamentals in terms of porter conventions hold it back. Works as a chile porter, but without the chile it'd be generic. I'd buy it in sixers were it available.
