Well-stocked IPA is packed with Sabro and Mandarina hops for notes of ripe strawberries and juicy melon, with a dash of wheat and oats for a soft, friendly finish.

Just another IPA! Nothing that really stands out with look, smell, taste, feel or overall ranking. Good IPA.

Trying something new, and local, this is Brooklyn Brewery Bodega Run IPA. It pours a less than transparent orange-amber, but does not appear hazy, and features a white head. The aroma is full of hop notes, both fruity and piney. The flavor is mostly standard for an IPA, though it has more fruit notes. There's enough hop bitterness to keep it clearly an IPA, but the sweet flavor is enjoyable.

From the neck of the bottle: "3222U 10003539 BB 05 2023 15:20"

Appearance: The body is a medium shade of gold. Although the body has a light haze, it is a clean haze. There head starts out medium-sized but quickly drops out to a short fluffy cap with good retention. It has some creamy lacing on the glass.

Aroma: There isn't a lot of aroma here; it has a touch of a floral note and what smells a bit like an orange peel. The aroma is very faint and just barely crests the surface of the beer.

Taste: Nothing really strikes the front of the tongue, but as it rolls to the center of the palate it picks up a bit of pine and some grapefruit flavor with pith. The back of the palate is bitter orange pith and a touch of both pine and mint. The aftertaste is lingering pine and mint.

Mouthfeel: It is light bodied with a medium-strength hop bitterness. Carbonation feels good. It has a wet presence on the palate and it feels a bit refreshing at the end. The good clean bitterness is the star of the show here.

Overall: The aroma is pretty lacking when it comes to overall presence but it still smells fine. Flavor-wise the beer is good enough to compete with some IPAs but it lacks complexity and strength. Where the beer really shines is in the clean hop bitterness which blends well with the citrus flavors. As a whole it isn't something I would pick up regularly but I would have no problem ordering it on a menu at a restaurant or during a brewery visit to Brooklyn Brewery. I would recommend trying it as a single pour or bottle.

A hazy light amber pour that gives way to a unique flavor profile. It feels lighter-bodied than most IPAs, and while there are undertones of grain and herbs, what really rings out are sweet fruit flavors, predominantly strawberry and melon. Light and sweet brings a refreshing quality, but also a less robust, lightweight aspect that brought my rating down. A bit more than a trifle, but not terribly memorable.

Poured from a can into a pint glass
Appearance – The brew pours a lightly hazed yellow-amber color with a one finger head of white foam. The head has a great level of retention fading over time to leave lots of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell – The aroma is strongest of a herbal and earthy smell mixed with some aromas of caramel and a bit of breadiness. Along with these smells come a good deal of floral hop smells as well as some black pepper and yeast. There is a touch of spice of coriander and a little bit of clove as well.
Taste – The taste starts out with a somewhat more crisp cracker malt flavor mixed with flavors of a earthy and herbal hop. There is a light sweetness of caramel malt and a bit of peach, which fade as the taste advances. All the while some of the floral hop that was in the nose, comes to the tongue, and it is joined by flavors of grass and a bit of melon. At the same time there is a light peppercorn spice and a touch of hay, which when mixed with the rest, leave a rather crisp, somewhat more dry and lightly hopped taste to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel – The body of the brew is lighter for a 6.7 % abv brew with a carbonation level that is average. For the crisp flavors of the brew the feel is great and makes for an easy drinker.
Overall – A rather nicely non-traditionally flavored and very drinkable brew. Rather fun.

Pouring from can the color is deep orange almost like a hazy. Head is very thick, however quickly dies down leaving a nice lacing to caress the glass. Nose is a soft citrus hint. Taste is also slightly citrusy, however it is backed up by a bitterness that creeps up ever so slowly. Decent IPA

Brooklyn Brewery "Bodega Run"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle "BB 06.2022" and sampled on 03/24/22.
$2 @ Wegmans, King of Prussia, PA

Notes via stream of consciousness: I'm trying to wrap my head around the name. Does "Bodega Run" suggest that it's just a basic beer? The label also reads "Everything you need" so is that what they're getting at? I don't know, but I'd imagine that apart from Brooklyn and maybe some of the other surrounding boroughs you won't find this is at a bodega. Moving forward, it's definitely not just a basic beer. It's poured a hazy golden body beneath a standard-sized head of white foam. Unfortunately the head has dropped to a standard collar while I was writing. That didn't take too long. My point was that this is hazy and thus not a commonly found Bodega beer, although things are changing. The aroma is interesting though. Is that coconut that I smell? That's unusual. There are notes of orange and nectarine as well. It's not the strongest aroma for an IPA, and there are even pale ales that eclipse this. It's unique though. On to the taste then... it's quite different than what I thought it would be given the aroma. I initially thought of mint chocolate chip ice cream but there's actually no chocolate there. It's minty, and kind of woody. It's dry as opposed to the sweetness of the aroma. I still get the coconut, and a bit of the orange. Necatrine steps out of the shadows in the finish along with some unidentified melon flavor. This is a weird beer! I won't suggest that that's what they meant by "bodega", but some bodegas are a bit weird, and the combination of the items that they sell is usually at least a little bit weird. Yeah, I don't know what to think about this, it's just so mixed up. I just went from coconut to mint to cedar to orange and back. The malt appears to be a basic 2-row and wheat/oats kind of thing. That explains the haze, but is it supposed to be a hazy IPA? A median bitterness runs through it, and along with the minty and woody hops it finishes dry. In the mouth it's medium bodied and softly crisp. Apart from the lack of head retention/lacing and the limited aroma the only thing I can fault this beer for is actually what makes it good. How can that be? Well, I see the lack of focus in the hop flavors as a bit of a fault, and yet at the same time that's what keeps you coming back for more! I just keep going at it wondering what's going on, and where it's headed next as it does change as you work through it. You get used to certain aromas and then your brain sets them aside a bit and other notes come forward. I got a lot of coconut at the outset but now I'm getting more orange, berries, melon, and herbs. I'm going to suggest that you try this if you come across it because it is so unusual.
