12 oz can poured into a lager glass. Look is deep brown, cola color with a pile of khaki foam on top. Some lacing left behind as you drink. Smell is malty, brown bread, a bit of fruit. Taste is sweet and malty up front. The middle is still rather sweet with more bready malt, toast, and some dried fruit. Finish sees a dash of bitterness before fading into a caramel and cocoa aftertaste. Feel is medium bodied with light carbonation and a bit of alcohol bite. Overall, this is a pleasant beer that fit well in the winter pack.

This episode begins by emptying the contents of two twelve ounce cans into a clear glass liter mug. The color of the beer is dark caramel, quite like a cola soda. It's darkly hued, but bright and opaque, but not murky. The reasonable head is biege, with a slight brownish tint. The aroma is solidly malty, as a good Dopplebock should have. That's the taste, too. This is malty sweet and just barely hoppy. It's ABV runs high for a Lager, but it fits nicely here, with all the roasted malt, save a little bit extra during the finish. As for sweetness, it's not as sweet as a Scottish Ale, although many share the same level of alcohol. The body is more akin to an ale than a lager, but that should be true for this style. To taste, reference notes might include dried fruits, like raisins, or prunes. Again, sweet, but nothing overly so. There's not much lacing left in the vessel, but the body remains solid through the finish. There are Doppelbochs that are richer and smoother, but this isn't bad, especially for its potency.

Slightly more than a fingers worth of lush creamy medium khaki colored froth... Excellent retention... Color is a deep dark brooding brown that allows just the slightest bit of light to leak through... Nose of roasted malt and burnt caramel... Palate and a more subdued than expected... Highlughted by roasted malt and faint bakers chocolate... Feel is medium bodied, lush and slightly creamy... Easy drinking but fairly one dimensional... Decent enough but I think I prefer the regular old Long Jawns a bit more...

(12 oz can, procured at the brewery within their BRRR-IETY pack... poured into a stemless wine glass)

L: rather creamy, dense-spongy foam; meringue... dark brown liquid; crimson highlights... maintains thin, wispy cap; laces in random trails

S: brown bread crust, medium-roast coffee grounds, hints of wet autumn leaves and old leather... edges are bordering burnt, like singed malt, a little too exposed; mashed floral petals... roast-forward for sure, little overt booze; moderate expressive detail

T: layered, bready, near molasses-y malt bedrock... subtly floral-herbal accents... hint of nutty-chocolate intermingling with bark leather... baked, cookie undercurrents pervade; dried fruited jowl tingles jingle

F: bites, blushes, washes over the palate, diluted-plush... long-rounded, bottom-heavy, but relatively levity... longing for a little chewiness

O: I drank a can a couple days ago, too cold, and wasn't impressed... this more mellow cellar pour is doing well enough... I hope they continue this seasonalish (2239)

Poured into a grip shaped goblet: color is very dark brown/near black, head is light tan and presents 1 finger thick, head dissipates to a thin top and some spotty lacing on the glass sides.

Smell is roasted malt, toast, bread, light chocolate, dark fruit, clean earthy hops.

Taste is bread, cocoa, roasted malt, toast, dark fruits, light grassy/earthy hops.

Mouthfeel is moderate carbonation, moderate sweetness, moderate bitterness, slight drying.

Overall a big lager and well within the doppelbock status - holds up well against standard bearers with a dryer finish.

12 oz can

pours very very dark brown, almost black but a little light gets through the edges of the glass. aroma is a little roasty - dark cocoa, a touch of dark fruit. similar flavors in the taste, some bready and caramel in there too. but well balanced, finishes on the drier side. medium to fuller bodied
