Canned on 12/19/20; consumed on 2/24/21
Pours a jet-brown body with subtle mahogany hues and is capped with a rich, pillowy two fingers of beige foam; great head retention leaves a thin layer of rocky cap, an expansive, creamy collar, and a nearly comprehensive spray of vague, spotty/webby lacing coating the walls of the glass.
Aroma opens with the double dry-hopping readily apparent, a wave of pine and earthy resin atop roasty malts and a softer lager yeast; grassy hops and a potent minerality peak over the middle as ashy char and more rounded chocolate malts finish with a faint bittersweetness.
Taste offers a distant medley of tropical fruits and grapefruit peel overwrought with roasty, malty edges; pineapple with a touch of smoke phases to tempered, charry roast and distant coffee tones on the back end, yield mango peel and hints of chocolate malt lingering past the swallow.
Mouthfeel brings a lithe medium body working with plush, moderate-high carbonation easing over the mid-palate, fluffy and effortlessly clean, until a charry, moderately bitter roast builds steadily through the back end as a soft, lingering grit contrasts a touch of juicy character peeking through with a discernible brightness past the swallow.
The hopping here is comprehensively abundant, reminiscent at times of a Black IPA as the liberal notes of pine, resin, and tropical fruits remain ever-present; however, the lager yeast is well-placed, and the borderline aggressive expression from the malt profile serves to highlight the contrasts of roast and brightness in one of the rawest of forms.
