The traditional gift for a fifth anniversary is something made of wood. After two years of canceled anniversary parties, you have to forgive us for feeling just a little apocalyptic taking this year's name from Black Sabbath. Rivers Turn to Wood is a blend of two Imperial Stouts aged in Cognac and Bourbon barrels for nearly two years then blended to bring out the best qualities of both barrels. While we were paranoid about what would come of this beer, it was just going through changes and getting better—waiting for us.

Anniversary 5.0, Barrel series.
Pours black with a soft, one finger head of foam that disappears fairly quickly. Aroma is knock you over the head bourbon. Taste is bourbon, roasted malt and heavy on the ABV. I also detect what I think is Cognac, though I'm no expert. The taste does not last long, which is odd for a bourbon barrel of this high a ABV. Still and all, good.
