The 2025 edition of our Imperial Brown Ale was aged for a year in Westland Whiskey barrels. Select malts from venerated English producers forge a flavor profile that is complex, but focused. Bold impressions of toffee, caramel, chocolate, and marzipan prove to be perfectly matched to the indulgent, whiskey-drenched nature imparted by the wonderful barrels from Westland.

Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a very dark mahogany brown, appearing opaque in the glass with a fine, half finger light khaki head with great retention and nice lacing. Aroma of dark toasted malt, brown bread, cocoa, caramel and faint mixed fruit. Flavor is dark toasted malt, molasses, whiskey, brown bead crust, dry caramel; a bit of coffee in the finish. Medium bodied with light to moderate creaminess. I've liked Ravenna's dark ales so far, but was wondering if a brown ale would hold up to the strong flavors of barreling. This one certainly can. The malt body is deeper than expected, almost approaching porter or stout strength, but keeping the bready nature of a brown ale with lighter roast to the malt. The taste is interesting, starting lightly sweet and malty with good whiskey, which starts to dominate the taste, but a wave of deeper malt carries the flavors into a balanced finish. Not much whiskey in the aroma, but well presented in the taste. Nicely done..
