From recent notes on a trip to Helena, Montana.
Poured into a small glass hotel glass. Pours a dark mahogany brown with moderate light transmission and a quarter finger, light khaki head that dissipates to patches with light lacing. Aroma of dry caramel malt with a hint of biscuit, mild dark fruit and smoke. Flavor follows with mostly dry, dark caramel malt with some graininess around the edges, hints of dark fruit and light, but satisfactory peaty smoke. Medium bodied with light creaminess. A nice, balanced, somewhat reserved Scottish style ale. The name actually comes from a historical landmark and perhaps raises expectations of a very smokey ale, but the smoke is clear, but not dominating; quite appropriate for this style. I thought this was a pretty good example of the style with great flavor, better than past reviews indicate. I accidentally bought an extra can of this in a case of Montana and nearby states singles I got to bring back home and was not disappointed to find the extra can.
