this was one of the better beers in here, really dark in the glass for a dunkel, which is usually closer to amber and red than it is to brown, but this one is read dark, past brick red into that almost brown range, still really clear and with an inch of thick white head on it, real pretty. the aroma is a mix of really toasty and slightly sweet, with an earthy undertone, somehow casting a thanksgiving impression over the whole thing, very autumnal, and with quite a bit more malt depth than we are used to in the style, although i am quite sure this is not wheat based, as the listing here suggests, a dunkel not a dunkelweizen. either way, its not missing the wheat, there is enough body and toasty cereal grain layers to this without it, and the yeast that finishes it off is super clean, less german, almost flavorless in the end. i like all the malt flavor, especially in this SRM range, without the normally accompanying residual sugar. its very well made beer, and one of the more interesting brews on the menu here. drinkable for its color as well. ill drink plenty of this come fall...
