Black Walnut Porter

While many folks have never tasted a black walnut, most are familiar with the large green nuts that blanket autumnal forest floors. We combined these distinctive native walnuts with Riverebend’s malted oats to produce a smooth and easy drinking robust porter. The malt backbone delivers notes of black coffee and cocoa powder while the black walnuts contribute fruity and earthy characteristics. The black walnuts used in this porter were generously given to us by a neighbor who gathered them on her property nearby. Once they arrived at the brewery, our team set about dehulling and cleaning them. We then roasted them to further develop their flavor. Once roasted we cracked hundreds of these nuts, by hand, before adding them to the kettle.
