The city of Cologne on the Rhine river in western Germany is renowned for its “Kölsch” beer. Although it utilizes a top-fermenting ale yeast, Kölsch is fermented relatively cold and further cold-conditioned. The purity law of 1516 outlaws using any wheat in lager beer, but since it’s an ale, Kölsch uses up to 20%. It ends up being very clear and yellow, with a slightly fruity aroma, and a sharp crispness.

From the 16 oz can purchased at the beer store. Dated 5/16/25. Since it's been around awhile I won't criticize the hop aroma, but it's very malty and perfectly drinkable. Mild aroma of straw and a whiff of lemon. Fleshy body and reminds me more of a Blonde Ale. Rather sweet with a tangy finish. Kind of winey and juicy with some mango and sweet Hawaiian bread. Overall this is a decent lower-alcohol brew with plenty of flavor even if it would baffle the citizens of Cologne.

Poured from 16oz can into a dimpled mug. Canned 5/16/25.

Appearance: pale golden hue with a light dash of haze and a thick head of frothy ivory foam.

Smell: moderately sweet malt aroma, also with a moderate dose of graininess.

Taste: kind of a complex malt flavor going on; malty, but also kinda vinous; just, like, hints of a sweet white wine in there. Bitterness is pretty low; the hops don't come through much but they have a little bit of a grassy, noble type character. It's pretty good!

Mouthfeel: medium-light body with a good carbonation and a decent creaminess.

Overall: a pretty full-flavored and interesting kölsch. I could see drinking a few of these on a hot day.

16oz can served in a footed pilsner glass. No date, stamped on the bottom with something that appears to start with "sparkle"

Pours a crystal clear light yellow with a couple inches of fluffy head that settles slowly into a small layer and some thick, clumpy lacing. Smell is brightly floral, lightly lemon, grainy/bready sweetness, somewhat grassy.

Taste leans toward the bready/grainy sweetness with a more honeysuckle tone, lemon is lighter and grassiness is almost gone.

Mouthfeel is super light, very effervescent. Overall, tasty, easy to drink, nice beer.

Clear yellow pour with visible carbonation, completed by a large white head and thick crowned lacing. Smells of bready kolsch yeast, light banana from a touch of wheatiness, honey malts, faint lemon zest and a kiss of grassy hops. Taste is much the same with grassy hops and lemon being much stronger. Yeast is still the star though. Bright medium body with decent finishing hop bitters, yeasty yet clean.

Pale yellow straw color, thickish head, strongly carbonated with lots of bubble chains. Dry, reserved taste along with a controlled bitterness that lasts a good long while. Good for a warm summer evening. Nothing pretentious about this beer. It is exactly what it says it is.

Clear golden body. Rich freshly baked malt bread, mildly fruity esters pervade throughout but remain in the background. Light hoppy bite provides balance. Easy drinking, medium bodied and substantial despite the sub 5% ABV. Well done kolsch.

Look: Clear straw yellow on the pour which brings about a nice, full, effervescent head that recedes quickly leaving spotty lacing behind
Aroma: Straw, lemongrass, cracker-like malt notes, floral hops in play, some grassy notes, and fruity esters as well - smells awesome
Taste: Straw and cracker malt up front with a nice lemon note soon followed by floral hops. Slightly sweet malt notes come into frame in the middle and finishes with a little honey and lemon combo. Super clean finish as well
Mouthfeel: Light, effervescent/spritzy throughout – pretty high carbonation but not harsh or detracting at all. Very crisp, clean, and quaffable
Overall: This one is hitting lots of good notes right now. I’d heard from my fellow NW BA-ers that this was good I totally agree so was stoked to get my hands on it. A solidly made Kolsch and add me to the list of folks who would recommend it. Delicious
