On tap at Fifth Hammer Brewery, Queens, NY
Pours a mostly clear straw color with a hint of light amber. A moderate foam head soon dissipates. No film or lacing.
Brewed with Szechuan peppers, their aroma is subtle but nevertheless impart a “hotness” to the scent. Also, lightly sour, funky and with an earthy malty and wheat like presence that evokes burnt hay. Fruity aromas are reminiscent of pear and melon.
The taste first emphasizes a doughy malt texture that imparts a moderate sweetness that plays off beautifully against the Szechuan peppers. What I like about the peppers is how they provide merely a gentle touch and balance, without descending into an atomic spicy burn. The yeasts are also strongly emphasized, with fruity esters that provide flavors of melon and pear, as well as peppery phenols. All throughout, there is a lightly tart lemon zest. Lightly funky, earthy and with a lightly bitter finish that evokes grass and burnt hay.
Medium bodied and smooth. Well attenuated, the palate and finish are very dry, leaving you hankering for more.
This Saison has a lot of complexity. I loved the peppers.
