Collaboration with Brooklyn Brewery
We dry-hopped this version with Bramling Cross hops, complementing the fruity Belgian yeast character. Pear and blackberry notes balanced with a gentle bitterness.

A: Pours a murky, almost milky medium to dark golden yellow in color with moderate amounts of fine active visible carbonation rising along the edges of the glass, light amounts of fine pale particulates in suspension, and faint gray-ish yellow + straw yellow colored highlights. The beer has a finger tall fizzy foamy off-white head that reduces to a medium sized patch of thin film covering a little more than 50% of the surface of the beer and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Light to moderate amounts of lacing are observed.
S: Light to moderate aromas of pale + wheat malts with minimal amounts of sweetness. There are moderate aromas of slightly spicy Belgian yeast with light aromas of light fruit/pear and hints of blackberries. Hints of smokiness in the background.
T: Upfront there are just shy of moderate flavors of pale + wheat malts with minimal amounts of sweetness. That is followed by moderate flavors of slightly spicy Belgian yeast. Finally there are light flavors of light fruit/pear and hints of blackberries. Hints of funkiness that lingers through the finish.
M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Hints of dryness in the finish.
O: Drinks fairly easily considering the strength and the alcohol is decently well hidden. Definitely an interesting saison with some unusual and unique flavors + aromas.

super weird but really complex, i expected almost more of a belgian golden or something, but this is decidedly odd. i dont know if its an intentional complexity or a yeast weirdness that they didnt intend, but two of the three of us kind of dig on it as we pass the glass around. i get some strange botanicals on it, a curious smoke element at the end too which seems out of place, and a jammy fruitiness for a beer that doesnt use any fruit. the yeast is bizarre to me too here, like stressed by the strength, and this does drink as strong as it is, but there is like an estery or even phenolic thing thats past belgian, funky but not in a rustic or wild way, just kind of weird, not sure i love it, but its all at the end, and until that point its a cool beer, even after it, but i just dont know how to place what i am tasting. a gin note, extinguished campfire, a little bitter bite as well, i dont know why this seems to be smoked, but it does. good depth of flavor though, and fully unique. a little boozy for what it is, but i dont mind this time of year. not my favorite beer we had in here, but another unique ale from these guys. man they do some esoteric stuff! this place has been the pleasant surprise of our new york trip so far!
