Slicing and dicing through the fruit forward beer scene, Baa Baa brewers set their sights on tropical fruits of lychee and passionfruit to fuel their smoothie sour ale Ninja Sheep series.
Pouring a neon pinkish-mauve, the Lychee & Passion Fruit version struggles with froth but blossoms with tropical, vinous, cidery and candied scents. As its sweet cereal base flavors coat the palate with grain sugars, pastry richness and squeezebox fruitiness, the middle palate springs to life with an undercurrent of lime, lemon, green apple and gooseberry ahead of the overcast of passionfruit to come. Wrapped in a cocoon of sweet lychee and melon, the session soon steers into a tart finish and an extension of fruit pastries.
Full for sour ale, the smoothie sour ale is quite tasty but is sweet and lacks dryness or meaningful acidity to balance the sugars and cereal.
