Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a medium golden amber with a two finger pure white head with great retention and thick lacing. Aroma of grainy malt, saison yeast, hints of lemon. Flavor is semi-sweet mixed grain malt, saison yeast, hay, cane sugar. Finishes somewhat drier with grainy malt and a faint background flavor of vague fruit sweetness and a hint of funk. Medium bodied with peppery, very active carbonation. A very interesting take on the saison style. All the base saison flavors are here, with classic yeast and grain malt, but with an odd, faint pure sweet flavor hovering in the background. It must be the potato, but does not really taste like it; almost as if someone figured out how to extract the mild sweetness of potato flavor to add to this ale. This very mild sweetness really adds a different, and interesting layer to the flavor that I like very much. Overall very well balanced and flavorful. Pushes the traditional saison envelope only a little, but yields big flavor results. I really enjoyed this and look forward to trying it again. The thick, bone white head is remarkable looking.
