Sultana & Huell Melon hops give this dangerously delicious DIPA it’s brash aromas reminiscent of a freshly cracked can of pineapple chunks, late summer-ripened stone fruit & bright citrus. Pours a hazy, golden straw colour with medium carbonation, and a smooth mouthfeel. DOUBLE EXPOSURE

Tasting Notes: Bold pineapple, ripe stone fruit, and bright citrus aromas, with a smooth mouthfeel and balanced tropical sweetness.

Pairings: Fish tacos, Charcuterie, Sharp Cheddar, Deep Fried Calamari OR Apple Crumble.

Tallboy from the LCBO; dated Sept 26 2020. Served barely chilled.

Pours a hazy golden-yellow colour, producing nearly an inch of puffy, soapy white foam that vanishes within a couple of minutes. A modest collar of creamy froth is the main remnant, though there's also an attractive, arc-patterned band of lacing - looks about right for the style. Pleasantly fruity but rather subtle on the nose - honeydew melons, fresh pineapple, and even a hint of strawberry, backed by a sort of fruit syrupy sweetness. I actually really like what's going on, I just want more of it from a DIPA.

This is a tasty imperial IPA that definitely falls toward the lighter end of its style - at first I'm getting some bready, wheaty pale malts as well as grapefruit, pineapple, apricot and melon. Hints of grapefruit pith and earthy, piney bitterness crop up at the very back end of the sip, along with just a hint of alcohol warmth to remind you of what you're drinking. Medium-full in body, with light carbonation that limply nudges the tongue, resulting in a soft, smooth-textured brew that is considerably more drinkable than most beers of its ilk.

Final Grade: 4.01, an A-. Cowbell's Double Exposure isn't the most exciting imperial IPA you'll find on Ontario's beer shelves, but it's still a pretty solid strong NEIPA, and rather good value at under $4 per can. The Huell Melon / Sultana hop combo is a novel one, combining honeydew, pineapple, citrus and a hint of pine. I wouldn't go out of my way for it, but I'll certainly be buying a few more cans while it's fresh and available. Recommended to hopheads across Ontario.

Pours hazy blond with a smallish, fast vanishing head. Lots of lace trails stick to the glass. The aroma is of tropical fruit and barley grains. The taste is of pineapple, mango, tangerine hops and bready, sweet malts with some alcohol heat. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with light carbonation. Light bitterness in the shortlived finish.

Quite a restrained DIPA in hoppiness and ABV. Still balanced and worth a try.

473 ml can served cold into a tulip. LCBO purchase for $3.75 or so. Canned November 24, 2020.

Appearance - Hazy bright yellowy gold brew with a nice two fingers of head which recedes fairly quickly. Small amount of lacing left behind with soapy cap.

Smell - Overripe melon and cantaloupe a little orange mixed in for good measure. Good nose, but somewhat subtle and the overripe fruit isn't a favorite.

Taste - Some melon and cantaloupe again, leaning very sweet then pulled back with grapefruit and lime to close. Booze is a bit apparent with this flavor combo. Some bready aspects mid sip rise to prominence.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied, lighter than most in the style, medium carbonation.

Overall - Pretty good DIPA, well constructed and everything, a touch lighter than most, just for me the flavor and aroma aren't something I'm a huge fan of (overripe melon and cantaloupe). Still worth a try as double Exposure is a little different than a lot of the DIPA's out there.
