473 mL can from the LCBO, one of two new brews in their Winter Collection mixed six pack. Dated Sep 14 2021 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a hazy golden-amber colour, topped with nearly an inch of frothy, soapy white head that collapses within a minute or two. The surface is left mostly barren; a few specks of film are left behind, with no lace or collar in sight. She's not a looker, but the aroma is dessert-like and appealing - I'm getting sour keys candy, plum and a lot of sugary sweetness, with hints of caramel and wheatiness buried underneath.
A beer of highs and lows - there are some things I really like about this one, but there are also a few that bug me. Quite sweet, with caramel apple and sugar plum definitely coming to mind; there's some bready, wheaty, vaguely cake-like sweetness in there too, as well as some lemon and lactic acidity. More table sugar/sour keys into the finish and aftertaste, with faint hints of plummy, raisin-ish dark fruit lasting longest of all. Light in body, with moderately low carbonation that gently tickles the surface of the tongue; feels a bit thin and watery to be honest, although that 'flaw' does sort of help in terms of drinkability.
Final Grade: 3.83, a worthy B+. Sugar Plum Sour is very much a gimmick beer, but the results are satisfactory enough: the ratio of sweet to sour is just about right given the theme, and I certainly had no issues polishing off my glass (and wouldn't have turned down another). It's not amazing enough to be worth going out of your way for, but it is an undoubtedly unique tipple, one which I'd be more than happy to return to on Christmas Eve, and sporadically thereafter if it returns as a single.
