Renegade #031 Chocolate Coffee Porter is brewed with locally roasted Shop Bike coffee and cacao nibs. Deep, dark chocolate and coffee characters dominate this bold brew. It’s like café mocha in a can.

473 mL can from the LCBO, one of two new brews in their Winter Collection mixed six pack. Dated Sep 10 2021 and served slightly chilled.

Pours black as night with chestnut brown highlights; situated atop is a full inch of soapy, foamy, tan-coloured head that falls off within several minutes' time. A modest collar of froth remains afterwards, paired with a narrow band of even lace - looks fine to me. Lots of ground coffee on the nose; a bit earthy/dirty, with subtler notes of dark chocolate, roasted malts and ash.

This is a serviceable coffee porter - lots of coffee grounds right off the bat, followed by hints of roasted malts, rich cacao nibs, dark bread, chocolate-covered raisin and just a touch of molasses sweetness. The coffee remains dominant through the finish and lingers into the aftertaste, which is earthy, with lingering hints of bittersweet chocolate. Light in body, with low carbonation that weakly brushes against the tongue; feels smooth, but also a little on the thin/watery side. I could drink a few of these in a row, but I love coffee with a fiery passion, so your mileage may vary.

Final Grade: 3.69, a B grade. Cowbell's Chocolate Coffee Porter is aptly named: it's coffee first, chocolate second, and everything else might as well be a background detail. An approachable beer, at least if you love robust coffee bean flavours... but it's also kinda one-dimensional, failing to really differentiate itself from the slew of other coffee stouts/porters you can easily find these days. A worthwhile sampler pack inclusion, and something to keep an eye out for if you share my fondness for coffee beers.
