473 mL can from the LCBO, included in Cowbell's Summer Mixer six-pack. Dated Mar 27 2023 and served barely chilled.
Pours a clear golden-yellow colour with sandy sediment suspended throughout the liquid; it's capped with two fingers of soapy, foamy white head that recedes within two or three minutes. A half-inch band of sticky lacing is deposited onto the glass, with a tight collar and patchy film remaining on the surface. Subtle aroma of whole grains, bready pale malts and grassy hops, with hints of lemon, honey and a faint suggestion of coconut.
The coconut is much more noticeable in terms of flavour, but thankfully it's not too overwhelming. Bready, doughy pale malts and a hint of honey sweetness mingle with coconut flavouring, which lasts through the finish; maybe a wisp of grassy hops and citrus, with more sweet coconut fading into the aftertaste. Medium-light in body, with low carbonation and a smooth, slick mouthfeel; not exactly crisp or refreshing, but easy to toss back nonetheless.
Final Grade: 3.57, a B grade. Cowbell's Coconut Blonde Ale isn't exactly a masterpiece - it's a boilerplate blonde ale with some coconut added (not sure if there's any real coconut in this beer, or if it's all flavouring - the weak aroma suggests the latter). Either way, the amount of coconut is just about ideal IMO: right in that sweet spot where you can't miss it, but it's not obnoxious/cloying, either. A fun, brainless summer quaffer that'll quench your thirst on a hot summer evening - coconut's not really my thing, but they've done a serviceable job here and I'd still recommend this to coconut lovers.
