473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Feb 21 2024 and served barely chilled.
Pours a hazy pale yellow colour, topped with two fingers of soapy, foamy white head that fizzles off over the next several minutes. It leaves behind a decent swath of sticky lace as it is reduced to a frothy collar surrounding a filmy cap; looks typical for the style. The aroma is pungently spicy and peppery, with wheaty, bready pale malts and subtle suggestions of lime zest also coming through. The spiciness is interesting, but more lime would've been nice.
It tastes OK - you do get a little bit of lime zestiness in the background, but it's an afterthought compared to the grains of paradise, which run roughshod over everything else. Grainy, wheaty malt flavours serve as the backdrop, with pungent spice gaining steam throughout the sip - peppery, herbal, and just a tad picante. Finishes woody and earthy, with a spicy, weakly zesty aftertaste that lingers briefly. Light-ish in body, with zippy carbonation that adds some spritz to this brew's smooth, fluffy mouthfeel - surprisingly refreshing and drinkable, but the spice becomes tiresome by the end of the session.
Final Grade: 3.52, a B grade. Cowbell has previously brewed a "Paradise Lime" witbier in small batches, which I presume to be an antecedent of Juiced Seagull Paradise Lime. My main gripe here is that the spicy grains of paradise totally overshadow the lime - and honestly, if you come into this expecting a spicy wheat ale, you might really enjoy this. Unfortunately, the lime is what I came here for, and this brew does not deliver in that regard. I preferred the blood orange version by a considerable margin, and while I wouldn't discourage other BAs from giving this a try, I'm also not inclined to revisit it any time soon.
