473 mL can from the LCBO, included in Cowbell's 2025 Summer Mixer; dated Mar 25 2025 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a foggy golden yellow colour, its complexion muddied up by countless flecks of fine sediment. Situated atop is one finger of loose, soapy white head that fades within a minute, reduced to a frothy collar and sudsy cap; lots of lace deposition after each sip. Lemon peel on the nose, with hints of grainy, bready malts and wheat; suggestions of tea and floral hops become more noticeable as the glass warms.
The flavour profile is along the same lines: lemon zest at the forefront, with some light lemon juice coming through by mid-sip; its bready, wheaty, slightly biscuity malt backbone is robust enough to remain relevant through to the finish. Black tea bitterness and grains fade into a slightly lemony aftertaste. Light-medium in body, with active carbonation that adds some gentle prickliness to this brew's otherwise soft, smooth mouthfeel. Excellent drinkability - tossing back a few of these on a Friday night would be no problem at all.
Final Grade: 3.74, a firm B grade. This brew reminds me of Mill Street's Lemon Tea Ale - a product that used to be commonplace, back during this province's craft beer boom days of the late 00's and early 2010s. This is basically a slightly better version of that: it's got more tea flavour & more authentic citrus flavour, with the trade-off being that the underlying kölsch is relegated to more of a supporting role. If you're a tea lover looking for a citrusy summer refresher, you will want to seek this one out - but if you just want a regular old kölsch, I'd stick with their flagship Absent Landlord.
