This crisp, easy-drinking lager is brewed with Ontario hops, Ontario yeast, and Canadian malts for a clean finish, and smooth flavour that delivers every time. Light, balanced and brewed for everyone who just wants a damn good beer. Standard by name, exceptional in quality, brewed for all!

473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Mar 16 2026 and served slightly chilled.

Pours a clear, pale golden colour, topped with nearly two fingers of foamy white head that fades within a minute or two. A narrow collar of frothy suds lives on, with respectable lace deposition after each sip; looks good so far. Grainy on the nose, with oat cereal sweetness (reminiscent of Alpha-Bits, sans frosting), as well as a faint vegetal note.

It's more flavourful than a macro light lager, but that's setting the bar pretty low. I'm getting cereal grain sweetness and bready, biscuity malts with a hint of oat bran; suggestions of earthy, weedy hops and graininess on the back end. Mildly malty conclusion that trends dry. Light in body, with appropriate carbonation for the style; crisp and easy-drinking, but utterly devoid of creativity.

Final Grade: 3.63, a B grade. My initial assumption was that Cowbell's Standard Light Lager was just a relabelled version of last year's Elbows Up. Let's review: they're both 4% light lagers brewed with oats, and both beers have nearly identical marketing copy (for the first sentence, at least). Sure, that's all conjecture, but as Lionel Hutz once observed, conjecture is still a kind of evidence. After drinking it, I'm still pretty sure they're the same thing, but hey - I'm just a guy on the internet. My gut feel is that ditching the patriotic exterior probably won't help this beer's sales, but every brewery should have a light lager in their lineup, and Standard is a fine one.
