really exceptional dark lager here, a little something different for them, but it shouldnt be unexpected, they do everything well and have covered quite a bit of ground in terms of beers over the years. this is pretty dark dark, some of these looks more like brown ales but not this one, near black in the glass with a good shine and a short but dense light brown head with patchy lace as it drinks down. deep roast to the nose, some mildly bready middle malts, and a slightly rustic lager yeast evident as well, hints of burnt pizza crust, noble hops, toffee, and licorice. the flavor and the body are both lighter than the look and the smell, deep roast and bitterness with some ashen and coffee character sure, but no real sweetness to the center, and a very dry finish. old worldy on the yeast, flavorful enough to push through the grain. a trace of smoke to this, raisin too, and maybe a hint of dark rye bread, black pepper, and coffee. its earthy and grounded but its not overly intense, the yeast is cool, and the body is smooth without being heavy. its almost creamy feeling overall, but fast drinking too. rare when my mom orders two beers in a sitting, that really is a tip of the cap to the brewer, so well done. i was super impressed with this, maybe slightly hoppier than what is traditional but this is the northwest and it makes perfect sense in this recipe. well done!
