A dark hefeweizen. This beer features rich chocolate and roast notes in addition to the clove and banana found in traditional hefeweizens.

A murky somewhat dark brown color. Decent tan head. Aroma is clove and caramel. Taste is clove, caramel, and a little banana. The shortcoming is in the body. The can describes it as creamy, and if that were the case, this beer would be very good. But the body is extremely thin and that detracts from the overall quality of the beer.

16oz can
date stamped 03/03/21
L: deeper brown than expected; tall tan head dissipates rather quickly
S: banana, caramel, clove, chocolate, yeast
T: caramelized grain, chocolate covered banana, spicy clove, yeast, wheat, raisin
F: medium body, higher carbonation, spicy clove notes bite the tongue
O: this one was a disappointment for me; the caramel takes over the Hefeweizen flavors

Pours a dark mahogany brown color - cloudy and opaque. Thick pillowy tan head forms on the beer then slowly recedes leaving just a thin layer of foam on top of the beer with a thicker ring surrounding the outside. Its a lovely looking beer and has one of the better heads for a dovetail weizen. The aroma has some notes of dried wheat, clove, dark bread, pepper, and all spice. Its initially somewhat muted, but this was in the upstairs fridge so it just got a bit too cold - those aromas do blossom a bit more as it warms up.
Taste follows the nose with some notes of dried wheat, dark bread, pumpernickel, clove, pepper and a general mulled spice quality to it. However, all of that takes a back seat to the completely distracting twangy sour taste I am getting from this ... I have no idea what it is, but it doesn't seem right, and frankly it kind of ruins the whole beer for me. There is a light hoppy bitterness on the back end - but its Feel is medium bodied, smooth and creamy. Moderate carbonation.
Overall this beer would be really nice - if not for that sour twangy note. As it is, with that there on the flavor profile, its distracting enough that I really did not enjoy this one.

Canned 2021/03/03, first can I tried was infected, so hopefully this one is better
Pours a large frothy off-white almost 2 finger head with good retention, little sticky lacing, dark hazy mahogany color
nose is also a bit infected, under that is sweet toasted biscuity malt, a little caramelization, nutty toffee, but also solventy character and bad acidic
Taste is very fruity and infected, more solventy flavors and acidity, little metallic, a little sweet caramelized sugars and toasted malt, biscuity, prune and plum, fig, little buttered popcorn diacetyl
Mouth is med bod, a little slick diacetyl, and acidic bite, med to higher fizzy carb
Overall sad, this seemed like it would be a good beer, but infected, both cans

after waiting at the bar for some 15 or so minutes to get a bartender to notice me and then being told their hefeweizen was out, i finally settled into this dunkel, well enough made but without much of a soul, a relatively flavorful and drinkable beer, faithfully made to taste quite traditional, deep chestnut to amber in color, average off white head on top, fine clarity. the aroma has some of that banana type yeast character to it, but also a rich cooked grain base, sweet even for the style, with some maple and brown sugar elements, appealing and familiar. the flavor is about the same, smooth to drink and evolving nicely, with the yeast doing the majority of the flavoring at the end. light spiciness for a moment, autumnal warming complexion to the grain, old school tasting but very fresh, made by someone who knows what they are doing, but that said, its rather generic as they go, doesnt stand out to me in any way, and could have been made by just about anyone with a little competence. i like traditional styles done well though, and thats what this is. i would have liked it better if it didnt take so long to get served in here...

Had on tap. Classic in composition by feel is a tad smokey for me. The taste has nice dark fruits, grains and banana, maybe a molasses, but could be more. Good but could be great! Smell is a tad muted. Overall good representation of style, but could be better with some tweaks.
