Once upon a time on a trip to Bamberg, at the base of limestone cliffs overlooking the Danube, brewers Bill and Hagen came upon a fairytale-like brewery. There, they drank one of the best dark lagers they ever had. Here is Dovetail's version, inspired by the monks— it delivers a rich and chocolaty roastiness.

On tap at Proletariat in Manhattan, NY.
This one pours a golden brown color, with a small head, and lots of lacing.
This smells nicely caramelly, with toffee, floral bitter hops, and chocolate.
Dovetail makes some extremely good lagers, and this is just yet another example of that. It’s toasty, lightly sweet with caramel and toffee, with a pleasant little floral and spicy bitterness on the back end.
This is creamy, medium bodied, with a nice drinkability.
I haven’t had any Dovetail in actual Chicago, but I see them on draft all the time in NYC, so that’s nice!

Appearance - The beer was dark brown with a modest white head and visible carbonation.
Smell - The dark malts came out in the aroma with a hint of chocolate.
Taste - Dry dark wheat led the profile. There was just a touch of chocolate. The sweet notes came more toward the finish.
Mouthfeel - The body had viscosity allowing the dry malts to linger.
Overall - Maybe my expectations for Dovetail are too high, but this was a mild disappointment.

Pours a slightly turbid Chestnut with a thumb of cream colored head. Good head retention and lacing
S: Brown bread and figs
T: Brown bread with a little toastyness and leafy hops up front. Dryness, woody hops and a kiss of Brown Sugar as this beer warms up. Finishes dry with some faint jammy notes and woody notes
MF; Medium body with slight carbonation
Solid take on the style, pretty drinkable

Light-bodied. Chocolate and toffee on the nose and on the palate. Soft, easy-drinking goodness.

Canned 1/30/24; drank 2/23/24 @ the Yarchives.
Semi-opaque brown/orange appearance.
A rough pour yielded a huge, noisy tan head; strong tree-rung lacing remained.
Brown sugar, cocoa & faint acorn notes in the nose.
Creamy medium mouthfeel.
Cocoa & mild acorn flavors up front; mild cream notes on the finish.
Rich but very drinkable; this is an enjoyable winter lager.

Thanks to falloutsnow, canned 2020/11/27
Pours a fairly large frothy off white 1+ finger head with med retention, touch of lacing, hazy auburn to copper brownish color
Nose sweet caramelized malts, biscuity toffee, little chocolate and coffee, a little dark fruit fig like, little toasted bread crust
Taste more rich malt, biscuity, toasted bread crust, mild caramelized sugar and toffee, light chocolate, some dried fruits, light bitterness, little herbal floral hop, drier soft finish
Mouth is med bod, med to a bit higher creamy carb
Overall solid dunkel, hits everything it should and soft enjoyable
