Served room temp, couldn't bring myself to warm a beer up, sue me. Dark rose pour, and right away you can smell the mulled spices, very potent, tart cherry serves as the base with a touch of oak. Very festive and pleasing. Taste is wacky with how strong the spices are, orange in particular clashes a little, overshadows the beautiful kriek cherry underneath, is also more acidic than expected. Palate is under siege in the sips, it isn't bad but wow it is a lot of process given the intensity of everything involved. Feel is sour, heavily spiced, boozy, and somewhat acidic. Honestly wonder if age would cut the acidity a bit to bring some more balance. Great idea, but the execution needs some fine tweaking

Glühkriek is an obscure Belgian tradition of serving warm, spiced Kriek during the winter holidays. It resembles a mulled wine or Swedish Glögg. Served warm from a crockpot into a soup mug at the Dovetail taproom in mid-December.
Dark saturated scarlet color, no foam or CO2 since served heated. A small cinnamon stick floats like a log in a pond. Aromas of cinnamon, cherry, orange peel, cardamom. Rich juicy cherries, very natural with accents of spices.
Taste is lightly tart, but much less sour than the base Kriek, tempered by a small addition of simple syrup. Rich juicy cherries remind me of Frederiksdal cherry wine, savory, tart, and puckering. Cinnamon wafts through. Mellow and rich, medium bodied due to the ample malt base. Still, without carbonation like cherry wine. Something about this was very satisfying. It was enjoyed by many at the bar, and was gone quickly before the night was over. A fun holiday tradition I hope continues.
Edit: Made the DIY version at home, used the recommended 2 teaspoons of sugar, which still was a little bitter, but still very unique and tasty. Would recommend making simple syrup with a tablespoon of sugar, before adding it to the steeping brew.
2021: Served at 150° from a coffee warmer in the taproom. Tasted like warm cherry pie out of the oven. Cinnamon, pie crust, dark tart cherries. Really excellent!
