Pumpkin the Bear is a progressive pumpkin beer. The base beer is a true to style German Dopplebock. Except that we threw in a whole mess of smoked malts. And pumpkin. Lots and lots of sweet gourdy deliciousness.

2021 edition. 6.8% ABV.
Burnished copper colored with a head that sizzles away quickly. Low aroma of sweet malt. Rich flavor of slightly sweet malt and rich smoke. Pumpkin flavor is very understated, not sure I would pick it up had I not known. Even mouthfeel, tickly carbonation. Not a typical pumpkin beer, much more smokey, but I love smoke so I like it.

Canned on 8/22/19

Pours a clear blood maroon body with rusty brown hues and a slight off-white head of frothy foam; head recedes quickly to a short-lived cap/collar and no lacing.

Aromas of smoked malts almost comprehensively dominate, but come to incorporate a light dusting of chocolate, a touch meaty, pumpkin flesh, and vague cherry skins along the way.

Taste lightly meaty smoked malts open, while sweet gourd develops along the mid-palate; a roasty char and slight dark fruit presence appear into the finish and on the swallow.

Mouthfeel displays a medium body accompanied with a balanced, moderate carbonation; drying, just shy of char-like crispness progressing steadily along the palate; minimal alcohol presence; vague acridity in the distance, while the swallow remains mildly robust and reprises a brief char.

Any hint of pumpkin beyond the vaguest notion is overpowered by smoke, but that aside, this is a pleasant surprise; smoky, malty, and softly balanced, this is truly a pleasant take on a rauchbier/doppelbock hybrid, as a robust yet clean pairing leaves me both satisfied and searching for just a bit more depth (or at least the advertised 'fall' flavors).
