Welly is our take on a classic English-Style Best Bitter - the eminently drinkable and always satisfying pub staple. As before, this one is made with a combination of Golden Promise and Maris Otter base malts and a careful little blend of specialty malt. New for this batch, however, is an addition of whole leaf Goldings - it’s a change we’ve been pondering for some time and one that helps Welly remind us of the very classics that inspired it.

Pale orange color, light carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel, a tad slick. Biscuity malt flavor, low aroma, seems to be lacking hops bitters. Good beer, but feels a little off style.

Maybe my favorite beer. It pours a lovely copper, malty taste but not overly sweet. Small head that dissipates quickly. I little touch of bitterness. I’m not sure of the exact standard of an English bitter, but this beer is a standard for me.

Pours a clear amber color with a large off-white head. Very little retention and no lacing to speak of.
The aroma is very earthy, with a touch of bready malt and plums.
Flavor follows the nose. Lots of toasted bread, burnt toffee, caramel, and earthy hops.
The feel is a bit on the watery side. Moderate carbonation. About right for the style.
Overall this is a pretty solid offering. Not a style I'm particularly familiar with, but this seems to be on point.

Appearance: Pours a slightly hazy amber with a one finger head; decent retention with clumps and squiggles hanging around
Smell: Toasted bread, toffee and eathy hop tones
Taste: Toasted bread and toffee forward with stone fruit tones developing; through the middle, the earthy hops emerge to provide balance; tea flavors wrap up the finish
Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation
Overall: I don't encounter this style very often but this is a great way to present a bitter on this side of the pond

Very pretty color, a crystal clear mix of copper and gold, off white quick to dissipate head; that being said a nice thin opaque film persists.
Nose has some nice malt to it; lightly toffee like, faint toasty grain, balanced little bit of fruitiness, whether yeast or hop driven I do not know.
Taste, oh yea; this is a beauty, biscuit, lightly browned, marmalade, little grassiness on the finish, overall just very delicate and balanced.
Light to medium body, malt beefs it up a bit, super smooth carbonation, no off flavors, finish dry and with lingering touch of hops on the tongue, low-medium bitterness.

On cask. Pours with a 1" spotty head, crystal clear orange amber, good lacing. Nose is spicy hop and fruity malt, light bitter/tannic aromas. Taste is slightly bitter with very mild caramel and malt sweetness. Nutty with hop spice, some tingle deep palate. Finish is medium dry. Feel is smooth and creamy. Could easily drink about seven of these.

Canned 10/18/23
My first Fox Farm visit saw me bringing a few beers home to review, and despite the simplicity of this one it just may be the one I’m most excited about. Fox Farm is known for these traditional styles so I’m more than happy to try out their English Bitter. Let’s crack it open and see what it’s all about
Pours a cloudy brownish orange with 2 fingers of light beige head that fades to a thin cap and leaves minimal lacing
The nose presents a great balance of toasty malt and fruity esters. I’m picking up on aromas of toffee, dark toast, raisin, black tea, apricot, earthy hops, raw grain, black pepper, and biscuity malt
In taste it focuses more on the earthy side and is a little less balanced but still damn good. On the front end of the sip I’m tasting bready malt, earthy hops, toffee, dark toast, brown sugar, raisin, and black pepper. The swallow brings notes of biscuity malt, herbal hops, black pepper, toffee, wildflower honey, raisin, dark toast, black tea, and raw grain
A light medium body pairs with gentle prickly carbonation, resulting in a crisp beer. Finishes mostly dry with an earthy bitterness
Oh yeah, this one is damn good. I should’ve gotten more than just 2 cans

Pours a tea brown color that is nearly clear with a soapy light tan head. The nose features a hefty amount of English toffee and earthy hops, with a bit of tea as well. Lovely nose on this one.
The taste is led by the toffee notes, with the tea following, but it’s the slightly bitter, earthy hop flavors that carry a bit of spice along for the ride as well. The drinkability of this ESB is off the charts.
The mouthfeel is medium and drying, adding to the drinkability. This is very well executed and a beer that I’d sit in a pub and drink all night.
