Brewed with the support and guidance of Live Oak Brewing Company of Del Valle, Texas. Sometimes referred to as “Polish Champagne” this historic, nearly forgotten style of smoked wheat beer originating from Grodzisk, Poland, is a delightful peak-summer refresher worthy of year-round enjoyment. Undoubtedly, no other brewery has done more to advance the style here in the States, both in their execution, understanding and presentation, than Live Oak - we were thrilled when they agreed to work with us on this project. While a clean fermentation, pleasant bitterness and hop aromatics and technical execution in the brewhouse are key - the smoked wheat is what naturally comes to define the style for most drinkers. Thankfully, Spencer of Thrall Family Malt in Windsor, CT also joined the effort by custom smoking, to our specifications, his Connecticut-grown wheat with native oak and maple. We’re thrilled with the result. Lively carbonation, lovely smoke, incredible drinkability - it’s a Grodz we’re proud to share.

Incredibly smoky beer, from the nose through the finish. It smells like a campfire in a New England Fall, with just a touch of meaty ham - but mostly wood.

At such a low ABV, there’s just a hint of Pils malt and citrus before the woody smokiness takes over - and lasts through the finish.

The quality reminds me of Aecht-Schlenkerla. I’d love to see a similar beer at a higher ABV, or with a darker malt base.

16oz. can served in my Fox Farm dimpled mug. Pours a pale yellow hue with a worthy, 1/8th inch, bright white cap embedded with pinpricks and ringlets. Clarity has a slight chill haze. Nose is somewhat reminiscent of a campfire. Taste follows nose with some grassy notes at the finish. Whereas a rauchbier from Schlenkerla imparts a smoked meat quality, this beer offers a charred wood character. Mouthfeel is light in body with an assertive carbonation. Overall, quite flavorful for 3.2% beer. My first experience with the style was memorable, albeit not pleasant (think dirty ashtray). This, however, is quite pleasant. Nice job.

Light clear golden color with small white cap and lacing.

Aroma primarily of gentle smoke behind which I detect a bit of grain.

Taste is of a lightly flavored beer covered with a clean smoke. Not a heavy smoke, rather like White Oak as opposed to Hickory, yet it's pervasive covering all. Simple flavors but well balanced.

Light texture with balancing carbonation.

This is a very competently made beer. The elements are skillfully brought together producing a remarkable example of this unique style of beer.

This one pours a clear golden yellow color, with a small head, and lots of lacing.

This smells like mildly citrusy, with some wheat, a clean and almost sweet smoke character, and a grassiness.

I really like this one. Maybe it's because I really like smoky beer, I don't find this as overwhelmingly smoky as some of the reviews I've seen. It's a clean and refreshing smokiness, and it melds well with the grassy, citrusy wheat beer base. There's a nice spicy and grassy hop character, too.

This is light bodied, refreshing, clean, and very crisp. It's quite drinkable, especially, if you're a smoky fan like myself.

I'm really happy that Fox Farm decided to take a stab at this old, weird style - they absolutely nailed it.
