Barrel Aged Sour w/Raspberries
Mixed Fermentation wine barrel aged blended sour aged on raspberries. A blend of sour German Smoked Lager and sour Farmhouse Saison barrels, this is aged 8 months with our house culture and fermented on hundreds of pounds of whole raspberries twice before being bottled conditioned for a further 3 months. Extremely vinous and bold, with deep, fresh raspberry aromas, subtle hints of citrus, spice and the faintest tinge of smoke, leading to a tart but ripe, mouthwatering finish.

While this beer was originally listed as an American Wild Ale, it seems much more appropriately categorized as a Flanders Red. The beer is a burgundy red and gem clear. Carbonation is microscopic and builds a reddish-pink head. After reaching one inch, the rocky head immediately turns creamy and quickly crackles as it fades, leaving no lace on a PBGC Crispy Boi glass.
The aroma opens with sharp tartness, very much like cranberries. Some light oak follows, while faint funkiness is ever present.
The flavor has only a passing resemblance to the aroma. While highly acidic, the tartness is dull. Sweetness is strong, with a ton of raspberry, followed by light tart cherries and, eventually, the strength of cranberries. All this fruit, and yet it retains an earthiness, perhaps in part due to a fairly heavy hand of oak. The finish is long, tart, and filled with cranberry.
Alcohol is as expected against this medium-body and satin-textured beer.
This is a nice rendition. Unfortunately, it suffers a bit from style expectations. If one sets aside the style and enjoys this on its own merits, any flaws can be easily forgiven. I can imagine this might replace wine for some occasions.
