“Der Rauchgarten” German style Smoked Marzen

“The smoking garden” is a traditional German märzen in which we utilized a hefty amount of beechwood smoked malt to create a beautiful Oktoberfest inspired beer. Fermented cool and lagered, it’s crisp but malt forward.

Pours foggy, amber honey (SRM 7-9). Two inches of off-white froth gradually settles to a thick ring and blanket. Fine patches of lace appear to dance across a Simpli pint glass.

Smoked sausage is up front in the aroma with a background of caramel. Light campfire smoke lingers in the distance.

The summer sausage is present in the flavor; however, it is far milder than expected from the aroma. This is quite sweet, with a mild acidity. Leather gives way to toasted malt and caramel. The finish is long, starting bold and gradually fading to nothing.

It has a medium to full body, with the hard smooth texture of polished metal. Metallic notes help elevate the alcohol presence to be more than expected. Carbonation is light and prickly.

This is a pleasant smoked beer, with a nice dose of that smoke in the aroma. The flavor, however, is milder than I had hoped. It still hit the spot on a bitter, cold, and gusty winter afternoon. I enjoyed it with Wild Boar sausage and a funky French cheese. The pairing was decent, but essentially neutral.

On tap at Aurora Brewing Rochester in Bushnell’s Basin, NY.

This one pours a dark-ish brown color, with a small head, and a little bit of lacing.

This has a pretty restrained smokiness, and has a really pleasant toasty and caramelly malt backbone. There’s a touch of earthy hop character that’s also very pleasant.

This is creamy, and medium bodied, with a nice smoothly malty finish.

Aurora is mostly known for hoppy beers, but I’ve really tended to enjoy their lagers, too.
