The pour is clear with a rich, black walnut body. Essentially black in the glass (SRM 36-40). No head develops, however, a microfine ring of lace and a film that produces legs are left when allowed to sit.
While pouring, the room is pleasantly introduced to the coffee and scorched malt. Closer to the Pretentious Glass Company snifter, the vanilla becomes significant, while coconut is found as a mild suggestion. Overall, the aroma is nicely balanced, and each component works well together.
The flavor opens with chocolate rum balls, followed by malted chocolate, and shortly after, coffee. The coffee builds, while vanilla and coconut remain mild accents. The finish is long and filled with rum. Mild sweetness alternates with mild bitterness. Eventually, warmth brings out licorice and possibly cinnamon.
It has a full, almost dense, body and a soft, smooth texture. The alcohol is very warm, giving a mild burning, similar to hot pepper. The carbonation is very soft.
This is an enjoyable dessert stout, that goes down easily in small sips. I enjoyed it on a mild, late winter afternoon.
