Got this one from De Bierkoning in Amsterdam
From a 44cl can into a snifter
Imperial stout with coconut and coffee
APPEARANCE: Syrupy but clear black pour yields a smaller, half finger, medium looking, creamy tan head with good retention. Head slowly recedes to a swirly wisp and ring. Black body with no carbonation evident. A swirly wisp and ring remains until the end leaving touches of lacing falling down the glass as it empties. Good looking stuff.
SMELL: Huge coconut nose on this one, with hints of vanilla cream, milk chocolate and some lightly roasted coffee in there as well. Mostly coconut for sure with a bit of lightly roasted, creamy coffee as well.
TASTE: Coconut, vanilla cream, lightly roasted coffee and some alcohol at the swallow. Big coconut up front. Very bold finish of coconut, milk chocolate and creamy vanilla, some sweet butterscotch, as well as some lightly bitter, roasted coffee and alcohol lingers on the palate. This is hugely flavorful. A little more bitter coffee for balance and it’d be pure perfection.
PALATE: Full body, thick and creamy, with slightly lower levels of carbonation. Heavy and creamy on the palate, goes down fine with a decent burn after the swallow, finishing sticky on the palate. Some heat lingers. Big, thick, heavy and beastly.
OVERALL: This is excellent. The look could be a little blacker, but otherwise, this is top notch. Lots of sweet coconut all over this one with a killer feel to boot. A little more coffee would balance it perfectly, and it could be a touch less harsh as well, but these are minor details. This is knocking on the door of world class, but as it is, it’s another example of how De Moersleutel is taking the bull by the horns and giving it a serious shaking. Hoping to see this again at some point. Cheers!
