From a 440ml can into a snifter
Barrel aged imperial coffee stout
APPEARANCE: Black pour yields basically no head. A faint, fizzy wisp is produced but it’s gone immediately. A faint ring hangs around. Jet black body with no carbonation evident. Looks flat by the end.
SMELL: Big nose of bourbon, oak, booze, some creamy coffee, vanilla, butterscotch and milk chocolate on the nose.
TASTE: Bourbon, alcohol, oak flavors, some vanilla and creamy coffee up front, hitting some more barrel flavors and alcohol at the swallow. Bold finish of bourbon, oak, sweet caramel, butterscotch and vanilla cream, some milk chocolate sweetness, as well as some slightly bitter yet creamy coffee beans lingers on the palate. Some booze as well. Flavorful.
PALATE: Medium body and very low levels of carbonation. Silky and slick with enough weight, goes down smooth, no bite, and finishes quite sticky on the palate. A bit of heat lingers. Carbonation is there but only about a third of what you’d expect.
OVERALL: Tasty stuff for sure. Love me some barrel aged coffee stouts and this one fits the bill in the aroma and flavor departments. Unfortunately it’s under-carbonated, meaning the look is lack luster and the feel is definitely a little flat. Still, it’s delicious, but doesn’t quite reach the heights it should definitely be aiming for. A future batch of this stuff is absolutely worth the effort and hopefully the brewers bring have already scheduled a brew day for something like this. Anyways, tasty stuff and well worth it, so long as you’re okay with slightly flatter beer. Cheers!

Pours a pitch-black coloration with a tiny, foamy head. Smells of lightly roasted, caramel malt, coffee, chocolate, lighter bourbon and just a hint of coconut and oak. Taste is a great balance of lightly roasted, caramel malt, dark, roasted coffee and rich chocolate fudge, with lighter notes of vanilla and bourbon and just a hint of coconut, licorice and oak. Finishes bittersweet, with a light/medium bitterness and some roasted coffee, chocolate fudge and boutbon lingering in the aftertaste. Rich, creamy mouthfeel with a rich body and light/medium carbonation.
This has got some rather rich notes of roasted coffee and chocolate fudge to it, with a great, subtle, mellow bourbon barrel presence that somewhat develops as the beer warms, while enhanced by ligher notes of vanilla, coconut, licorice and oak. Another fantastic stout by De Moersleutel that somehow manages to feel rich and subtle at the same time, with a great balance of sweet and bitter notes and a surprising lack of booziness considering the ABV, not too mention quite a sublime mouthfeel.
