Double barrel aged barley wine with vanilla and lactose
APPEARANCE: Pours a small, looser, fizzy light tan head with lousy retention. Head quickly fizzes down to a faint wisp and ring. Clear maroon or wine red in color with no real carbonation. Splotchy wisp and ring remains leaving dots of wisp on the glass.
SMELL: Whisky and woody character initially, some toffee and caramel aromas, some vanilla, red fruit character and alcohol on the nose. Decent strength.
TASTE: Vanilla and lactose flavors initially, with some whisky, oak, toffee and caramel sweetness and then some booze at the swallow. Flavorful and sweet up front. Strong finish of vanilla, whisky, oak, butterscotch and toffee sweetness, caramel, some light red berries and booze lingers on the palate. Flavorful.
PALATE: Medium body and medium levels of carbonation. Creamy enough on the palate, goes down oaky, a little prickly, and finishes somewhat mouth-coating. Decent heat lingers.
OVERALL: Solid stuff. The lactose and vanilla additions are interesting, though it might slightly outplay the barrel aging in the flavor profile a little. Nice color on this one too; I’m usually a fan of darker barleywines. A good brew but not quite up to the lofty standards that the Blue Code originally set. Cheers!
