Pours a pitch-black coloration with a small, creamy, mocha-coloured head. Smells of slightly roasted, bready, caramel malt, some coffee and chocolate, as well as lighter dark fruits, vanilla and hints of bourbon and oak. Taste is an excellent balance of slightly roasted, bready, quite caramelly malt, rich, dark and bitter coffee and chocolate notes, vanilla and lighter dark fruits, with notes of raisin and plum, as well as hints of licorice, tobacco, bourbon and oak. Finishes bittersweet, with a light bitterness and some coffee, chocolate, vanilla and bourbon lingering in the aftertaste. Full, thick mouthfeel with a rich body and light/medium carbonation.
This is quite a rich and complex Imperial Stout with a luscious mouthfeel and distinct bourbon-barrel notes. While it may be just a tad too sweet for my personal taste, there are some roasted, bitter notes to balance this out, while it never gets too boozy either, despite a nice, warming bourbon presence in the finish. Overall, this makes for a rather enjoyable sipper, best enjoyed by the fireplace I reckon, that is rich, complex and well-balanced, which is pretty much De Moersleutel's modus operandi, for the most part. I'm not sure what it is with Dutch breweries like De Moersleutel, Frontaal, Kees and de Molen consistently banging out these amazing barrel-aged beers while Germany is still quite lagging behind in that area, it's a bit of a shame really.

Barrel aged imperial stout
APPEARANCE: Clear black pour yields a 2+ finger, medium looking, fizzy tan head with decent retention. Black body with no carbonation evident. Head eventually recedes to a full wisp. A slight wisp remains leaving lots of nice lacing down the glass.
SMELL: Bold nose of whisky, oak, vanilla cream, milk chocolate, pure chocolate, oats and cookie dough. Bold and decadent, like bourbon soaked chocolate cake. Lovely and lovely.
TASTE: Bourbon, oak, milk chocolate, vanilla cream and cookies up front, with plenty of barrel and booze at the swallow. Bold and flavorful. Big, boozy finish of whisky, vanilla cream and milk chocolate, some bitter pure chocolate, cookie dough, brownies, oak and alcohol linger on the palate. Very flavorful and decadent. Absolutely sublime.
PALATE: Fuller body and medium to lower levels of carbonation. Creamy on the palate, plenty of weight, goes down smooth with a decent burn at the swallow and finishes sticky on the palate. Some solid heat lingers.
OVERALL: These guys just keep nocking this style out of the park. One after the other flies out of the yard. The barrel aging stuff is world class as well. They seem to have mastered turning an already thick and flavorful imperial stout into a delectable barrel soaked desert-in-a-glass. Lots of wonderful chocolate and fudge aroma and flavor here, with the right dose of bourbon and booze all over it. I’d just drink these guys if I could. Cheers!
