440 ml can, from Vinmonopolet. ABV is 10%. Pitch black colour, large and creamy brown head. Aroma of chocolate / cocoa, vanilla, mild coffee and roast malts, a hint of oak and brandy. Warming and sticky mouthfeel. Very sweet and cloying flavour, distinct notes of oak and brandy, loads of chocolate and vanilla, some bittering hops and more roast malts in the finish. Too sweet for me, really, but still a well made beer.

Imperial German chocolate cake stout with cacao nibs, vanilla and cognac
APPEARANCE: Clear black pour yields a three finger, thicker looking, creamy tan head with excellent retention. Lovely head on this one. Black body with hints of carbonation evident. Head slowly recedes to a full, creamy cap and leaves sheets of lacing on the glass. Splotchy wisp remains leaving lots of nice lacing on the glass as it empties. Solid.
SMELL: Lots of milk chocolate and vanilla beans, fudge brownie cake, cream and hints of cognac on the nose. Bold and very desert-like.
TASTE: Milk chocolate and cacao, vanilla beans, fudge brownies, roasted malts and a decent layer of cognac at the swallow. Bold and flavorful. Big finish of cacao nibs, milk chocolate, fudge, vanilla cream, roasted malts, some bitter coffee and solid cognac flavors linger long after the swallow. Flavorful and plenty desert-like. Cognac covered fudge cake.
PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Creamy smooth on the palate, slightly silky, goes down smooth and finishes somewhat slick and mouth-coating. Some bitterness lingers.
OVERALL: Really good. This is a lovely desert adjunct stout and the cognac addition works great with the sweet, cake stout base. Good look and feel on this one as well. De Moersleutel always kicks it with their stout beer and this is another example of why they’re the best in the country at this style. Definitely worth checking out if you’ve got the chance. Cheers!
