Stout with tonka beans & roasted peanuts

APPEARANCE: Clear black pour yields a 3 finger, thicker looking, creamy, dark tan head with great retention. Jet black body with no carbonation evident. Head slowly recedes to a full, thick, creamy cap and clings to the sides of the glass. A faint wisp remains leaving lots of nice lacing down the glass. A touch lighter than the others, but the head is still lovely.

SMELL: Some tonka beans, vanilla cream, milk chocolate, some roasted notes and light coffee aromas on the nose, with notes of peanuts as well. Medium strength.

TASTE: Tonka beans, vanilla cream, milk chocolate, roasted notes and some tobacco flavors at the swallow. A bit of alcohol as well. Peanut flavor is very mute, if at all. Bold finish of roasted and tobacco flavors, milk chocolate and vanilla, tonka beans for sure, as well as plenty of bitter coffee flavor linger on the palate. A decent dose of booze too. Flavorful, but little in terms of peanut character.

PALATE: Full body and medium levels of carbonation. Creamy enough on the palate, plenty of weight, goes down fine with a decent burn and finishes somewhat mouth-coating on the palate. Some heat lingers.

OVERALL: This is okay, but is perhaps my least favorite of the different Willy Tonka variants. The look is slightly lighter than the others, the feel a touch harsher as well, and the peanut addition isn’t really much of a factor at all here. The base beer is still solid, but it doesn’t quite have the same decadent desert-like character the others in the series have. Not bad or anything, just not quite up to the lofty standards this series has always advertised.
