In our series of sweet pastry stout monsters there is one odd looking chap named Crod. He loves cinnamon churros. His mouth and neck actually extends to chug them all at once. We suggest sipping this one though.

Pours a pitch-black coloration with a large, frothy, mocha-colored head. Smells of roasted, caramelly malt and distinct cinnamon, as well as some chocolate and vanilla. taste is a great balance of roasted, caramel malt, distinct cinnamon, some chocolate and vanilla, as well as hints of brown sugar and licorice. Finishes bittersweet, with some roasted malt, cinnamon, brown sugar and vanilla lingering in the aftertaste. Full mouthfeel with a rich body and medium carbonation.

I've never had a Churro before, but this is pretty much what I always imagined it would taste like, so they certainly achieved what they set out to do here as far as I'm concerened. Big cinnamon and brown sugar notes backed up by caramel malt and vanilla, while some roasted accents, licorice and bitterness lend a certain balance to this, preventing it from becoming too sugary sweet. Not being a big fan of pastry stouts or overdone cinnamon in a beer, I found this to be surprisingly enjoyable, as there's just a great overall balance to this, never turning too cloying ot boozy. A pastry stout for people that don't really like pastry stouts, I reckon, great success.

Imperial stout with lactose, cinnamon and vanilla

APPEARANCE: Clear light brown pour yields a two finger, thinner looking, foamy, fizzy, light tan head with okay retention. Head fades rather quickly to foamy, bubbly cap. Clear bistre brown body with medium levels of carbonation for the style. A splotchy wisp eventually fades, leaving a faint ring only and no lacing on the glass as it empties. Looks a little flat.

SMELL: Definite vanilla cream, lactose, milk chocolate aromas, as well as some decent cinnamon on the nose. Touches of leather as well.

TASTE: Lactose, vanilla cream, some cinnamon notes as some alcohol at the swallow. Medium finish of lactose, milk chocolate, vanilla cream, some creamy coffee flavors, a touch of roasted malts and some cinnamon spices linger on the palate. Medium strength.

PALATE: Medium body and medium carbonation. Creamy enough on the palate, goes down fine and finishes slightly mouth-coating. A touch of heat lingers.

OVERALL: Meh. This is okay, but it’s not up the high standards this brewery should be held to. The look is far too thin and light in color, the head too foamy, and the flavors don’t punch you in the gut like these pastry stouts normally do. The beer is fine on its own, but in the catalogue of greatness that is De Moersleutel’s stout beer lineup, this one falls short of the mark. Not a bad brew, but when life is good, even an average day can seem like a disappointment.
