From a 44cl can into a snifter
Canned 30 September 2021
Imperial stout with cacao nibs, lactose, and aged in bourbon barrels
APPEARANCE: Clear black pour yields a 2+ finger, medium looking, creamy, frothy tan head with great retention. Head fades to a thick, full, frothy cap, then eventually down to a half wisp and ring. Black body and minimal carbonation evident. Slight ring remains but leaves no lacing on the glass as it empties.
SMELL: Big nose on this one, with lots of bourbon and oak aromas, milk chocolate and cacao, vanilla cream, coconut, some caramel notes, as well as some chocolate brownies on the nose. Bold and decadent. Lots of barrel and chocolate brownies.
TASTE: Bourbon, oak, booze, with notes of vanilla cream and milk chocolate up front. A decent hit of alcohol at the swallow, moving into a big and bold finish of bourbon, oaky flavors, cacao and milk chocolate, some chocolate brownies, vanilla cream, sweet caramel and butterscotch flavors, and a good dose of alcohol linger on the palate. This is bold and flavorful. Decadent.
PALATE: Fuller body and lower levels of carbonation. Creamy and smooth on the palate, enough weight, goes down fine with a bit of a burn and finishes rather sticky on the palate. A decent dose of heat lingers.
OVERALL: This is spectacularly delicious. Just like pretty much all of the other barrel aged brews De Moersleutel has made, and certainly all the barcode series brews, this is a wonderful, delectably delicious example of what barrel aged imperial stout can and should be. How they do it is a mystery to me. Part of me thinks it’s magic, but if my 8 year old ever heard that I attributed something to magic, he might kick me out of the house, so I won’t say anything about magic. But yes. Magic. Lovely stuff and well worth stocking up on if you’ve got the means. Highly recommended. Cheers!
