Imperial stout with lactose, cacao nibs, vanilla and coffee
Aged 1 year in Rum barrels
APPEARANCE: Clear black pour yields a three finger, medium looking, slightly foamy, crackly tan head with good retention. Black body with no real carbonation evident. Head slowly recedes to a splotchy wisp and clings to the glass. Touches of wisp remain leaving traces of lacing on the glass as it empties.
SMELL: Bold nose of rum barrel, some woody notes, roasted coffee beans, notes of vanilla and milk chocolate, with hints of caramel and butterscotch on the nose. Nice stuff.
TASTE: Lots of flavor, with roasted coffee beans, vanilla cream, milk chocolate, some nice, sweet rum barrel and a touch of alcohol at the swallow. Chocolaty, roasted coffee, barrel aged goodness. A bold finish of roasted malts and espresso, vanilla cream, sweet caramel and butterscotch, milk chocolate, as well as some sweet, sugary rum barrel linger on the palate. Very tasty.
PALATE: Medium body and lower levels of carbonation. Silky and slick on the palate, syrupy, goes down smooth and finishes very sticky. No heat lingers.
OVERALL: This is excellent. Lovely, lovely stuff with lots of the good stuff going on. Love their barrel aged stout brews and this is a great example of the style done right. The base beer is great and the adjuncts mesh seamlessly, while the barrel adds that little extra in the right places. Check it out if you can. Highly recommended.
