The first time we ever brewed Smeerolie Mexicake was in 2018. Pim, being a fan of everything spicy, got inspired by a Mexican treat called the Mexicake. With one of our base beers Smeerolie we created a new sensation: Smeerolie Mexicake! An imperial stout with loads of Chipotle, Cinnamon, Cacao nibs and Vanilla. A buena mezcla of sweetness and spiciness that became a favorite among our fans too.

In 2020 we brought this beer back. But we missed this beer already. We missed it so much that we had to bring it back to you guys in 2022. Then, as you can imagine, someone in the brew team (clearly it was Rob) said: What about we added some coffee to this beer? And we did. The result on that, you’ll discover in this beer!

Got this from the webshop. Cheers!

Canned 20 January 2022
Imperial stout with ahumado chipotle chilies, cacao nibs, vanilla, cinnamon, coffee

APPEARANCE: Pours out clear black and yields a 2+ finger, medium looking, creamy, dark tan head with great retention. Head slowly fades to a full, frothy cap and clings to the sides of the glass. Pitch black body with lots of carbonation evident.

SMELL: Big nose of vanilla cream, cacao nibs, cinnamon, definite chili pepper aromas, and some roasted aromas with a slight hint of espresso on the nose. Bold and aromatic.

TASTE: Cinnamon, vanilla cream, milk chocolate, with some chili notes and roasted flavors at the swallow. A decent bit of chili heat as well. Bold finish of spicy chili peppers, cinnamon flavors, roasted, bitter espresso character, some vanilla cream, milk chocolate and roasted malts linger on the palate. Flavorful, with some well-balanced spices and a touch of chili heat. Lovely stuff.

PALATE: Medium-fuller body with medium carbonation. Creamy on the palate, enough weight, goes down smooth with a bit of a chili bite and finishes a touch mouth-coating. Some decent chili heat lingers.

OVERALL: Excellent stuff. Flavorful, well-engineered, with a good, solid chili pepper bite that’s not overdone. Love the Mexicake line and this is another great instalment in the series. Well worth checking out if you're a fan of spiced imperial stouts. Yes.

Pours a pitch-black coloration with a medium, creamy, mocha-colored, lasting head. Smells of roasted, caramel malt and distinct coffee, with some chocolate and hints of vanilla and cinnamon coming through as well. Taste is an excellent balance of roasted, caramel malt and strong notes of coffee and dark chocolate, as well as some vanilla, cinnamon and chili peppers, with hints of tobacco and licorice as well. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some coffee, chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon and chili peppers lingering in the aftertaste. Full mouthfeel with a rich body and low/medium carbonation.

I'm so happy to finally have found another stout from De Moersleutel instead of their shitty NEIPAs and it's honestly one of the best stouts I've had in a while. Of course I love Mexicake stouts in general and this is just so well done, with the addition of coffee feeling a bit overpowering at first, especially in the nose, but really mellowing out as this warms. All of the additives are just fantastically balanced here overall, each adding to the flavor profile without feeling too overpowering, although the coffee and chocolate probably stand out the most here, with almost the right amount of chili heat, which could still be just a tad more pronounced for my personal taste.
