Tasting notes from 01/20/17
Had on-tap@ Moonraker in Auburn, CA
Appearance - Served up in a pint, crystal clear and copper in color with a sandstone, quarter-finger width head. Fair retention, resulting in a thin, broken layer of suds. Decent lacing, with some broken sheeting and spotting.
Smell - Slightly metallic nose with some earthy, leafy tones. A hint of toffee sweetness.
Taste - Follows the nose. Lots of earthy character, mostly low metallic and tea-like bitterness. Underlying toffee and toast malt flavor come through mid-taste, along with a faint touch of cocoa. Ultimately though, this brew is dominated by that metallic and tea-leaf combo, and it lingers in the finish.
Mouthfeel - Perhaps the weakest aspect of the brew. Terribly thin for a barleywine. Light-to-medium in body with fair carbonation that thins out quickly in the finish.
Overall - The first Moonraker brew that I'd say is sub-par. Too earthy and off-putting, and it also lacks both depth and body. Not one I'd buy again.
