The world’s oldest true beer style
This original lager has been a favorite of Bavarian Kings for centuries. To keep this tradition of craftmanship alive, the Schulz family brews this lager according to the Reinheitsgebot. This means no chemicals or preservatives, just quality ingredients for this highly drinkable, dark mahogany beer. Its malty backbone with hints of caramel, nuts, and candied fruit will have you saying, “YodelayHeeHoo!”

I got a tall boy can of this beer from the Hilton Tru Hotel just outside Knoxville, Tennessee. It poured, smelled, and tasted like most typical German dunkels. The mouthfeel was a bit fizzy but overall it's a great beer.

A very nice example of a Dunkel. Pours a nice, deep, mahogany color. Has a very nice malt note, with a little bit of caramel note and some nice touches of milk chocolate, with a little bit of butterscotch note thrown in. Very smooth, mellow, easy to drink. A little more roasty character is the only shortcoming. Has a good almost 3/4" head, good lacing. As good as many examples from Germany but fresher. Easily a solid 3.75 from me. And it's local.

Fantastic quality brew here. Pours a deep mahogany with a generous mocha colored head. The flavor profile is superb; mallow, milk chocolate, essence of light brown sugar and a lip smacking, slightly sweet - slightly bitter taste that lasts for minutes. This brewery has done an insanely fabulous job interpreting the style and produced a brew as good if not better than those from the motherland. I will seek this out again, it's quaffable, delicious and authentic. Great job Shultz's!!

A slice of Munich by way of Knoxville, Tennessee. Schulz Brau adhered to the German Purity Law, and used all imported ingredients to brew this dark lager. Beautiful simplicity in the taste, possibly could have used a slight bit more roast to captivate the palate. But still, enjoyable. Where are the brats?

Pours clear, dark brown in color with 1/4 inch head. Taste is toasted caramel malts and a touch of leather. Medium-light bodied, sweet, with moderate carbonation. Another solid lager from Schulz. Could have several of these. Will look for Schulz next time I am by the Smokies.

On tap at McGillicuddy's Five Corners, Essex Junction, VT.
The appearance was a nice looking semi-dark amber brown murky color. A bar pour's kind of slim head swiftly died off. No lace.
The aroma had caramel earthy biscuit tones rolling into some woody clean malts. Light nuts and toffee on the back end.
The flavor moderately leaned into a dried malty sweetness with earthy and woody notes. Clean aftertaste of caramel earthy dry malts.
The mouthfeel was between light and medium bodied with a slight dryness about it. Some sessionable quality to it with a good ABV. Carbonation felt good. Mild woody clean to caramel finish.
Overall, nice Munich Dunkel lager well worthy of coming back to.
