quite a classic example of the style here, especially for an american brewer, and one i had never even heard of before this at that! nicely done! its darker than many, deep reddish brown in the glass under a high and thick tan head. it smells a bit sweet and very high gravity, almost fusel to me, sharp, but rich enough for it to work and to appear balanced in the smell. aroma of dried fruit like raisin, cherry, and even cranberry to me, molasses and brown sugar sweetness and long boiled grain sugar, an obvious earthy wheat presence, well cooked, and then the german lager yeast behind it all. the flavor follows a similar trajectory, interestingly spicy for the style, very sweet all the way through right until the finish where the lager yeast makes itself known. dried red apple, rum, raisin, toffee, and fig all come out of the rich grain base, and there is almost a barrel quality to this with the mellowness and the alcohol. full bodied, chewy as it warms, but full flavored, balanced, and tasty all the way. i like it being a little darker and bigger than many, but still be readily identifiable as weizenbock. a swell job with a tricky style here. ill keep an eye out for more from these guys.
