473 mL can from the LCBO - I believe this was in a Bench gift pack from last Christmas, but I'm not 100% on that. No canning date; served barely chilled.
Pours slightly hazy, its golden amber-hued body topped with an inch of soapy, off white-coloured head. It melts away within three minutes or so, leaving behind a creamy collar and sudsy cap, with decent lace deposition. The aroma is a little funky, including notes of apple juice, oak, leather and clove; I'm also getting hints of grape, vanilla, barnyard mustiness and pepper.
Lots going on flavour-wise. It starts out fruity and a little tart, with sweet red apples and cider giving way to notes of oak, leather and ripe pear. Mildly bretty funk on the back end, with hints of white grape, clove and peppery spice preceding a leathery, slightly warming aftertaste with lingering orchard fruitiness, as well as some oak tannin and . Medium in body, with moderately low carbonation that softly agitates the palate; smooth mouthfeel that goes down easy.
Final Grade: 4.04, an A-. Bench's Bière de Garde is an intriguing farmhouse ale that has a little bit of everything: fruity esters, spicy yeast characteristics, some barrel funkiness. What more could I ask for? Well, the mouthfeel did seem a little limp, and the apple flavours are a little overstated - but trust me when I say that I'm deliberately digging for things to complain about. An excellent rustic farmhouse ale: I can't claim to have scads of experience with bières de garde, but I think this would make a really good introduction to this uncommon style.
