473 mL can from the LCBO; dated May 1 2020 and served slightly chilled.

Pours hazy and translucent; its lemondrop yellow-hued body is topped with nearly an inch of soapy, foamy white head that fizzles off within the next two or three minutes. A messy swath of lacing is splattered about in its wake; its remnants include a generous collar of froth as well as some patchy, filmy islets on the surface. It smells sour and a little funky - lots of lemon, with hints of stone fruit, floral/earthy hops, passion fruit and unventilated gym bag.

Quite tart at the front of the sip, with lactic acidity and lemon preceding a pleasant mixture of fruity flavours - I'm getting hints of lime, passion fruit, apricot and berries, overlying a gritty, crackery wheat malt base. Hints of floral hops and earthiness crop up towards the finish, with hints of lactic acidity, gooseberry and funkiness carrying on into the aftertaste, albeit only briefly before it fades to dry. Light in body, with assertive carbonation that prickles the palate with enthusiasm from the start of the glass right through to the finish; feels very crisp, virtually scrubbing the tongue with each sip. Very refreshing and drinkable, neither of which are traits I necessarily tend to expect from this style.

Final Grade: 4.17, an A-. Green Fields is a superb, highly sessionable dry-hopped sour that I must highly recommend to any and all BAs interested in that sort of thing. This one starts off quite sharp, but its hop bill provides a diverse array of fruity notes that play upon the base sourness quite effectively. Bench has never disappointed me so far, and their sour ales in particular are always a safe bet.

Hazy light gold with a thick head. Spicy fruity nose. Light sour body with a substantial citrus tartness. Pleasant crispness, a refreshing sour ale.

473ml can served cool into a pint glass. LCBO purchase in the $3.50 CDN range. Canned March 6, 2020.

Appearance - Mildly hazy, pale golden color with a finger and a half of brilliantly white head. Moderate staying power and lots of spiderweb lacing left behind. Fairly minimal carbonation.

Smell - Tart and funky with earthy gym socks, some citrus and weedy green hops. Aromatics are strong and no holding back here.

Taste - Quite tart initially with lots of citrus fruit coming through afterwards. Lemon, lime maybe rhubarb and clementines are featured here. Even a touch of basil lying in the very back.

Mouthfeel - Light bodied, sufficient carbonation and actually drinks juicy. Easy drinking wild ale that I would like to come back to.

Overall - One of the best sours out there on the local market, Bench further cements their status as one of the upper echelon local breweries in Southern Ontario.
