473 mL can from the LCBO; dated Mar 24 2021 and served slightly chilled.
Pours a brilliant ruby-red pink colour, a little hazy but still translucent. Half a finger of loose, frothy, pale pink-tinged suds are formed, but it disintegrates rapidly, leaving behind a thin collar and little else of interest. There's some kind of weird, musky, stinky sock funk on the nose that I am genuinely not enjoying, but beyond that I'm also getting hints of raspberry, wheaty grain and maybe a touch of grassy earthiness.
Luckily, it tastes quite a bit better than it smells - the funk is still there, but considerably more muted, and it integrates nicely with the sour berry flavours. Starts off tart/sour, with raspberry and sour cherry atop hints of wheaty malts and leathery, musty funk. A little more juicy/sweet at the finish, with raspberry and hints of strawberry/cherry leading into a mildly sour, earthy aftertaste that lingers only briefly. Medium-light in body, with decent carbonation that remains prickly and active from the start of the glass right through to the finish.
Final Grade: 4.00, an A-. I was preparing for the worst after sniffing this one, but Berry Fields turned out to be a rather delightful raspberry sour. In all honesty, I don't drink a lot of sours these days, and 90-95% of the ones that I do drink are just basic lacto sours with fruit - so maybe my nose just isn't used to funk anymore? In any event, it stopped bothering me once I started to actually drink the beer, at which point it became a very enjoyable experience. This is well worth a try if you have any appreciation for sour raspberry ales, and I fully expect to return to this one a few more times in the coming months.
