Old School Light Lager is crisp and refreshing. The name is a nod to our brewery, which was built in a refurbished school house in Beamsville, Ontario. 10 IBU

TASTE: Light bodied and crisp with a subtle, herbal character.
AROMA: Delicate aromas of maize, water cracker, and light bread.

At my lady Pamela's house; canned and chilled, from the Bench Henderson Collab Mixer boxset at my favourite LCBO at The Roundhouse Centre in nearby Windsor. My first beer from the Lincoln, ON brewery.

473 mL can from the LCBO, included in a Bench & Henderson collaborative mixed pack. Coded Mar 11 2024 and served slightly chilled.

Pours a clear straw yellow colour, kicking up an inch of loose, sudsy white head that falls off within a minute or two. Decent lace deposition, with a frothy collar and filmy cap remaining on the surface - looks fine to me. Muted, neutral aroma of white tortillas, grainy malts and a hint of dough; seems normal enough for the style.

It's nothing to write home about, but I do think this is a well-made light lager. Very straightforward flavours with no surprises: a little bit of corn chip, doughy malt and grainy sweetness, with a touch of appleskin. Grainy finish followed by a relatively dry aftertaste. Light in body, with aggressive carbonation that exhausts itself quickly; crisp and prickly initially, then smooth later on, but with great drinkability throughout the session. I could easily knock back several of these in a row, if I were a light beer guy.

Final Grade: 3.64, a passable B grade. As far as light lagers go, Bench's Old School lands well above the mean. OK sure, there's a ton of macro lights bringing that average down, but craft light lagers are also frequently disappointing. This one isn't especially exciting or creative, but it's immaculately clean and totally inoffensive - something to stock in your cooler next summer, as I imagine all of the beer drinkers at your typical family function would sip this without a fuss.

Review from notes. Part of the Henderson/Bench mixed pack. Served cold into a pint glass.

Appearance - Pale golden color with great clarity and a fair amount of bubbles. A small three quarter finger head was poured and fizzled away fairly quick.

Smell - Not a lot here, light graininess, but clean and fresh enough to enjoy.

Taste - Light graininess with minimal sweetness. Low hops presence even for light beers but thankfully no off flavors.

Mouthfeel - Light and crisp, good carbonation. Easy beer to knock back on a hot afternoon.

Overall - As far as light lagers go, it's pretty solid, not a beer I'm likely to repeatedly enjoy, but better than many other light lagers out there.
