473 mL can from the LCBO, included in a Bench / Henderson collaborative mixed pack. Coded Sep 6 2024 and served slightly chilled. A decaffeinated coffee blonde.

Pours a clear medium golden colour, featuring one finger of soapy, frothy white head that doesn't last longer than ninety seconds. A modest collar and a filmy cap linger on, with snaking lines of lace left behind after each sip. Lightly roasted coffee on the nose, with hints of doughy, bready malts and honey sweetness.

It tastes alright, but between you, me and the rest of the internet, I think they skimped on the coffee. Bready, doughy malts and light honey sweetness come through, along with some mild roasted coffee flavours. Weak coffee on the back end; minimal bitterness from either the coffee or the hops, followed by a sweet-ish conclusion that persists into the aftertaste. Light-medium in body, with low carbonation that gently tickles the surface of the palate, resulting in a smooth, slightly slick mouthfeel. Fair drinkability - inoffensive, but also rather underwhelming.

Final Grade: 3.5, barely squeaking out a B grade. Daily Grind was set up to fail: what's the point of a coffee beer that goes easy on the coffee? I'll give Bench the benefit of the doubt - blonde ales are supposed to be light/refreshing beers, and perhaps they just didn't want to overdo it. But that brings me to my next problem: why decaf? Maybe it's so that folks with caffeine sensitivities can drink it worry-free? If that's the case, my follow-up question would be: just how many caffeine-avoiders are seeking out and consuming coffee beers, for real? Just use actual coffee, god dammit. Sorry... I get cranky when I don't get my caffeine.
