473 mL can from the LCBO, included in a Bench / Henderson collaborative mixed pack. Coded Sep 5 2024 and served slightly chilled. I like how it lists 'oak chips' in the ingredients list - this must be a very high-fibre lager.

Pours a clear golden-yellow colour, sporting an inch-thick head of soapy suds that dissipates within three or four minutes. A frothy collar and cap linger on, with a narrow band of lace clinging to the perimeter of the glass - looks normal enough so far. Uninspiring aroma of bready malts, apples and floral hops with a faint whiff of oak.

It tastes fine: the flavour profile is grainy first and foremost, with bready malts, appleskin and grassy, citrusy hops also contributing. Oak joins in later on, with hints of spicy hops and grassiness closing out the back end; dry aftertaste. Light in body, with average carbonation that briskly tickles the palate, adding some pep to this lager's otherwise smooth mouthfeel. Quite crushable, but no more so than your typical pils.

Final Grade: 3.69, a B grade. Bench's Field Trip Oaked Pilsner is an acceptable pale lager, but I don't think it's anything special. When I pulled this tallboy out of the mixed pack, my first thought was "huh, I don't think I've ever had an oaked pilsner before." I'm sure there's more than a few out there, if you look for them - but do the oak chips *really* add enough to this pilsner's aroma or flavour profile to seriously justify their presence? If you ask me, not really - I mean, they don't subtract anything either, but I'm still left wondering "why?" I guess because they can, and they did. It's alright, but I'd rather be drinking their Lincoln Lager.
